Is the opinion of Fraser MacLennan as he takes charge of a new Volvo EC160C and the first EC140C to be delivered in Scotland.
Ordered at this year's Scot Plant exhibition the first EC140C to be delivered in Scotland goes to Fraser MacLennan Contractors Ltd based at Dornoch, Highland. The fourteen tonne excavator together with the slightly heavier sixteen tonne EC160C join a growing fleet of predominantly Volvo products for the Company's ground and civil works projects. "We've found the improvements to an already comfortable cab to be a real plus on the new C series machines and as an added bonus, the fuel consumption is better as well," said Mr MacLennan.
Launched at this year's SED the new EC140C completes the line up of Volvo's C series crawler and wheeled excavators all featuring Tier III low emission engines. The installed power of the 4 cylinder engine found on the EC140C is 94hp which contributes to an excellent performance being well matched to the machine's hydraulics. The machine's 'Integrated work mode control' provides high efficiency, rapid dig cycles and low fuel consumption. This advanced mode control system ensures the maximum possible hydraulic horsepower available is delivered at a constant engine speed under varying load conditions. In addition, boom and arm geometry provide highly competitive digging forces and lifting capacities, which makes for faster work cycles. Hose rupture valves are fitted as standard to the boom and dipper cylinders as are quick fit hydraulics and a hammer/shear service.
Operator comfort was one of the determining factors in choosing the new Volvo excavators especially since each machine is allocated to a specific operator. The Volvo Care Cab offers a large roomy interior with plenty of leg room and foot space. The excellent all round visibility is enhanced by pressurized and filtered cab air supplied by a 14 vent, climate control system. An adjustable easy to read LCD colour monitor provides real time information of the machine functions, important diagnostic information and a wide variety of work tool settings. The monitor also doubles as a monitor for the rear view camera.
The new machines will be deployed on regular contracts undertaken by Fraser MacLennan Contractors for Scottish Water, local golf courses and general civil and ground works in the Highlands region of Scotland.
